This 48" rose was to be the central focus in the Daily Mass Chapel. The design features an intimate figure grouping of Saint Elizabeth and the young John the Baptist. I chose to draw them in a less formal pose, where the two figures share a private moment between mother and son rather than address the viewer directly. The design is cast in a somewhat "English" style, recalling some of my favorite windows of the Gothic revival. The ground on which they sit grows green with specific plant life, Sage and Monks Hood in this case, another typical 19th Century touch. Surrounding the window is a wide border of red cardinal wings. I had to convince everyone that this subtle angel reference would work well and everyone seems quiet pleased with the result. As is usually the case, the photograph does not convey the richness of the German glass nor the detail in the painting.
